The CAIA® designation is awarded by the Chartered Alternative Investment Analyst Association. While not mandatory, candidates are strongly encouraged to have foundational knowledge of the financial service industry and have completed a college corporate finance course and an introduction to statistics course. Qualification requires: self-study curriculum materials and two in-person, proctored exams.
The CPA designation is offered and recognized by all 50 states, the District of Columbia, and four U.S. Territories. Each state and jurisdiction has its own Board of Accountancy that grants the CPA certification and licensure. It is awarded to individuals who have demonstrated the highest standard of competence in the accounting profession. Qualifications vary by state and typically require: a bachelor’s (120 hours) and an additional 30 hours or a bachelor’s and master’s; integrated five-year accounting program; one to two years of relevant experience supervised by a licensed CPA; passing the Uniform CPA examination; and CPA continuing education requirements, which vary by state but most mandate 120 hours every three years.
